What We Do
Welcome to Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center
We’re not your typical healthcare clinic — and that’s exactly the point.
At Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center, we believe you deserve more than rushed appointments and generic treatment plans. You deserve a practitioner who actually listens, who digs deeper to find real answers, and who treats you as a whole person rather than a collection of symptoms.
Located right here in Shelton at 1000 Bridgeport Avenue, we’ve built our practice on one simple principle: healthcare should actually make you healthier. That means combining the ancient wisdom of acupuncture with modern functional medicine to address what’s really going on in your body.

What We Do
Natural Healthcare Solutions That Actually Work
Acupuncture Therapy
Ancient healing meets modern expertise. Our licensed acupuncturists use precisely placed, hair-thin needles to activate your body's natural pain relief and healing responses. Most patients feel deeply relaxed during treatment — many even fall asleep. Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, migraines, fertility challenges, or stress, acupuncture works with your nervous system to restore balance naturally.
Functional Medicine
Tired of doctors treating symptoms while ignoring causes? Functional medicine is different. We use advanced testing to identify exactly what's going wrong in your body — from hormone imbalances to gut dysfunction to nutrient deficiencies — then create a personalized protocol to fix it. This isn't guesswork. It's healthcare that actually makes sense.
Health & Wellness Programs
Your body is a connected system, not a collection of separate parts. Our comprehensive wellness programs combine acupuncture, nutritional guidance, lifestyle modifications, and ongoing support to help you achieve lasting health — not just temporary relief. We've helped patients lose weight, boost energy, improve sleep, and finally feel like themselves again.
Pain Management Therapy
Chronic pain doesn’t have to control your life. Our pain management treatments focus on reducing inflammation, improving circulation, calming the nervous system, and restoring proper movement — without relying on medications. Through a customized combination of acupuncture, functional medicine insights, and supportive therapies, we help relieve back pain, neck pain, arthritis, sciatica, migraines, and long-standing pain conditions so you can move and live comfortably again.
Women’s Health & Fertility Support
Your body goes through constant changes — and your care should adapt with it. We specialize in women’s health concerns including hormone imbalances, PMS, menstrual irregularities, fertility challenges, IVF support, perimenopause, and menopause symptoms. By improving blood flow, regulating hormones, and calming the nervous system, acupuncture and functional medicine work together to support your reproductive and overall health naturally.
Stress, Anxiety & Emotional Wellness
Stress doesn’t just live in your head — it affects your entire body. Our treatments help calm your nervous system, improve sleep, boost energy, and restore emotional balance. Acupuncture naturally shifts your body out of “fight or flight” mode, while functional medicine evaluates underlying contributors like adrenal fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, and hormone imbalances. Patients often report feeling calmer, clearer, and more resilient after just a few visits.
Digestive & Gut Health Restoration
If digestive issues are holding you back, the problem often starts deeper than you think. We help patients struggling with IBS, bloating, acid reflux, food sensitivities, inflammation, and unexplained digestive discomfort by addressing gut function at the root level. Through targeted acupuncture and functional medicine testing, we identify imbalances and create a personalized plan to restore digestion, reduce inflammation, and help your body absorb nutrients properly again.
Cosmetic Acupuncture
Look refreshed — naturally. Cosmetic acupuncture helps improve skin tone, reduce fine lines, boost collagen production, and promote healthy circulation without injections or surgery. By treating both the face and the underlying internal imbalances that affect skin health, we help you achieve a brighter, more youthful appearance from the inside out. Many patients notice improved glow, firmness, and texture within a few sessions.
Dry Needling
Dry needling is a highly effective treatment for muscular pain, tightness, and restricted movement. By targeting trigger points deep within the muscle tissue, dry needling helps release tension, improve blood flow, and restore normal muscle function. It’s especially effective for neck pain, back pain, sports injuries, headaches, and repetitive strain injuries — often delivering fast, noticeable relief.
Functional Muscle Testing
Your body holds the answers — functional muscle testing helps us uncover them. This non-invasive assessment method evaluates how your muscles respond to stress, nutrients, and potential imbalances within the body. It allows us to identify hidden issues such as nutritional deficiencies, organ stress, or nervous system imbalances, helping us create a truly personalized treatment plan tailored to your body’s unique needs.
Heart Sound Recorder (HSR)
The Heart Sound Recorder provides a powerful, non-invasive way to assess cardiovascular stress and autonomic nervous system function. By analyzing heart sounds and rhythm patterns, we gain insight into circulation efficiency, stress levels, and early signs of dysfunction before symptoms become severe. This advanced technology helps guide personalized care and preventative health strategies.
Lab Services
When symptoms don’t match “normal” lab results, deeper testing matters. Our comprehensive lab services include advanced blood work, hormone panels, nutrient testing, food sensitivity analysis, gut health testing, and more. These insights allow us to pinpoint the root causes of chronic symptoms and design targeted treatment protocols that go far beyond guesswork.
PEMF Therapy
PEMF therapy helps recharge your body at the cellular level. Using gentle electromagnetic pulses, this therapy supports circulation, reduces inflammation, accelerates tissue repair, and enhances overall healing. It’s commonly used for chronic pain, joint issues, fatigue, recovery from injury, and overall wellness — many patients feel deeply relaxed and energized after sessions.
Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular repair, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. This non-invasive treatment supports skin health, muscle recovery, joint pain relief, and overall vitality. Patients often experience improved energy, faster healing, and enhanced skin appearance with consistent sessions.
Scar Therapy
Scars can restrict movement, disrupt nerve signaling, and contribute to chronic pain — even years after surgery or injury. Our scar therapy techniques help soften scar tissue, improve mobility, restore circulation, and normalize nerve communication. This treatment is effective for surgical scars, injury-related scars, and C-section scars that may be affecting overall body function.
Why Choose Us
Why Shelton Families Trust Dr. Joe Downer When Other Treatments Have Failed
Here’s what we’ve learned after treating thousands of patients in Connecticut: most people who walk through our doors have already tried everything else. They’ve seen multiple doctors. Tried the medications. Done the physical therapy. And they’re still hurting, still exhausted, still not feeling right.
That’s exactly why Joe practices differently here.
We actually listen
Your first visit isn’t a rushed 10-minute appointment where you’re treated like a number. We spend real time understanding your complete health picture — your symptoms, your history, your lifestyle, your goals. Because you can’t fix a problem you don’t fully understand.
We find the root cause
That nagging back pain? It might be connected to inflammation from food sensitivities you don’t know you have. Those hormone issues? They could be linked to stress patterns affecting your adrenal function. We connect dots that other practitioners miss.
We combine ancient wisdom with modern science
Acupuncture has worked for over 3,000 years because it works with your body’s natural healing systems. We pair this time-tested approach with functional medicine testing and nutritional protocols that address what’s actually happening inside your body.
We get results — and we measure them
You’ll know you’re getting better because you’ll feel it. But we also track your progress objectively so we can adjust your care plan as your health improves.
Our Process
Your Path to Feeling Better Starts Here
Step 1
Schedule Your Visit
Call (203) 257-7550 or book online. We’re open 7 days a week from 7 AM to 7 PM, making it easy to find a time that works for your schedule. Many new patients get in within the same week.
Step 2
Comprehensive Initial Evaluation
Your first visit isn’t a rushed appointment. Joe takes time to understand your complete health history, perform a thorough physical assessment including posture, movement, strength, and range of motion, and really listen to your concerns and goals. For functional medicine patients, specialized testing may be recommended to identify root causes.
Step 3
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your evaluation, Joe creates a customized care plan designed specifically for you. You’ll know exactly what treatments are recommended, how long your care plan will take, what results to expect, and what your investment will be. No surprises.
Step 4
Treatment & Transformation
This is where the results happen. As you progress through your care plan, you’ll start feeling changes — often sooner than you’d expect. Many patients notice improvements within 1-3 visits. Joe monitors your progress, adjusts as needed, and celebrates your wins with you.
Step 5
Maintenance & Optimization
Once you’re feeling great, we help you stay that way. Many patients transition to monthly maintenance visits to keep their health optimized and prevent problems from returning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions Shelton Patients Ask Us Most
What's the difference between dry needling and traditional acupuncture? Do you offer both?
Yes, Joe offers both and is highly trained in each. Dry needling targets specific muscle knots and trigger points — it's great for localized muscle issues like a stiff neck, sore back, or sports injuries. Traditional acupuncture treats your whole body by balancing your nervous system and energy flow, making it ideal for systemic issues like stress, hormones, digestion, and chronic conditions. Joe holds advanced certifications in Dry Needling, Pelvic Floor Dry Needling, and Trigger Point Acupuncture from ASE Seminars. Many patients benefit from a combination of both approaches, and Joe will recommend the best treatment strategy based on your specific condition.
Does acupuncture hurt? I'm nervous about needles.
Honestly? Most new patients are surprised by how gentle acupuncture actually feels. The needles we use are incredibly thin — about the width of a human hair — nothing like the needles used for shots or blood draws. Most people feel a tiny pinch or nothing at all when needles are inserted. Once they're in place, patients typically feel deeply relaxed. Many actually fall asleep during treatment! If you're needle-nervous, just let us know — we're experts at helping anxious patients feel comfortable.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need before I feel results?
This depends on your specific condition and how long you've been dealing with it. Some patients notice improvement after their very first session, while chronic conditions that have developed over years typically need more time to resolve. During your initial evaluation, we'll give you an honest assessment of what to expect. On average, most patients see significant improvement within 6-10 sessions. We never recommend more treatment than you actually need.
What's the difference between functional medicine and regular medicine?
Great question — and it's a big difference. Conventional medicine typically focuses on diagnosing diseases and treating symptoms, often with medications. Functional medicine asks a different question: WHY is your body producing these symptoms in the first place? We look at the underlying causes — things like nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, gut dysfunction, chronic inflammation, or toxic exposures — and address those root issues. Instead of managing symptoms forever, we actually fix what's wrong.
Do you accept insurance for acupuncture in Shelton?
Yes! Many insurance plans now cover acupuncture, and we're in-network with several major carriers. We also accept out-of-network benefits. Here's the best part: we handle insurance verification for you at no charge. Just call us at (203) 257-7550 with your insurance information, and we'll tell you exactly what's covered before your first appointment. No surprises.
Can acupuncture help with fertility and IVF support?
Absolutely — fertility support is one of our specialties. Research shows acupuncture can improve blood flow to reproductive organs, regulate hormones, reduce stress (which significantly impacts fertility), and increase IVF success rates. We work with many fertility clinics in the area and have helped numerous couples throughout Fairfield County on their journey to parenthood. Whether you're trying to conceive naturally or undergoing IVF, acupuncture can be a powerful addition to your fertility plan.
What conditions does functional medicine treat?
Functional medicine is especially effective for complex, chronic conditions that conventional medicine struggles to resolve — things like autoimmune disorders, thyroid dysfunction, hormone imbalances, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, stubborn weight gain, brain fog, and "I just don't feel right" symptoms that don't show up on standard lab tests. If you've been told your labs are "normal" but you still feel terrible, functional medicine may finally give you answers.
How is Joe Downer's approach different from other acupuncture clinics in Shelton?
Several things set Joe apart. First, he combines acupuncture with functional medicine and nutritional wellness — most local clinics only offer acupuncture alone. This integrated approach means we can address problems from multiple angles simultaneously. Second, as Chair of the Connecticut Society of Acupuncturists and one of only 800 Master Practitioners of Nutrition Response Testing in the country, Joe brings credentials and expertise that few practitioners in the state can match. Third, Joe spends significantly more time with each patient, which means better outcomes. Finally, he focuses heavily on education — you'll understand WHY you're feeling a certain way and HOW the treatments help.
Is acupuncture safe? Are there any side effects?
Acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by a licensed, trained practitioner. Side effects are minimal — occasionally patients experience slight bruising or temporary soreness at needle sites, or feel extra relaxed or tired after treatment (in a good way!). Serious side effects are exceptionally rare. Joe Downer is fully licensed by the State of Connecticut (License #CT 534) and holds a Doctorate of Acupuncture from Pacific College, along with advanced certifications in dry needling, trigger point therapy, and pelvic floor treatment. Your safety is always our top priority.
I've tried everything for my chronic pain. Can you really help?
We hear this constantly — and yes, Joe helps patients like you every week. That's why people from all over Connecticut drive to Shelton specifically to see him. Chronic pain that hasn't responded to medications, physical therapy, or other treatments often improves dramatically with acupuncture and functional medicine. Why? Because Joe addresses the problem differently. He looks at pain through the lens of your whole body system — examining inflammation, nerve function, structural alignment, and underlying health factors that other approaches miss. With 140+ five-star reviews and thousands of patients treated, our track record with "I've tried everything" patients is genuinely remarkable.
How do I get started? What's my first step?
Easy — just call us at (203) 257-7550 or book online. You can either schedule directly or request a discovery call if you want to chat first and make sure we're the right fit. We're open 7 days a week (7 AM – 7 PM) and often have same-week appointments available, so if you're ready to finally feel better, you don't have to wait long to get started.

Our Services
Acupuncture Services in Shelton, CT
Professional Acupuncture Therapy
Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center provides comprehensive acupuncture therapy services to patients throughout Shelton, Connecticut and the surrounding Fairfield County region. Dr. Joseph Downer, DAc, LAc, Doctor of Acupuncture from Pacific College, utilizes traditional Chinese medicine techniques refined over thousands of years, combined with modern understanding of neurophysiology and orthopedic medicine. As Chair of the Connecticut Society of Acupuncturists, Joe brings expertise that few practitioners in the state can match. Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along your body's meridian pathways, triggering natural healing responses including increased circulation, reduced inflammation, endorphin release, and nervous system regulation. Whether you're seeking relief from chronic pain conditions, support for fertility and reproductive health, management of stress and anxiety, or treatment for digestive disorders, our personalized acupuncture protocols address the root causes of your health concerns rather than merely masking symptoms.
Functional Medicine Services
Our functional medicine practice represents the future of personalized healthcare, now available to residents of Shelton, Trumbull, Monroe, Stratford, and throughout Connecticut. Unlike conventional medicine's symptom-focused approach, functional medicine investigates the underlying mechanisms causing your health problems — from cellular dysfunction to hormonal imbalances to gut microbiome disruption to nutrient deficiencies. Through comprehensive diagnostic testing including advanced blood panels, hormone assessments, organic acid testing, food sensitivity analysis, and genetic evaluation, we identify precisely what's happening in your unique body. Your personalized treatment protocol may include targeted supplementation, dietary modifications, lifestyle interventions, stress management techniques, and detoxification support, all designed to restore optimal function to your body's interconnected systems.
Integrative Health & Wellness Programs
At Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center, we believe lasting health requires a comprehensive approach addressing mind, body, and lifestyle factors simultaneously. Our integrative health and wellness programs combine the therapeutic benefits of acupuncture with functional medicine insights, nutritional counseling, and sustainable lifestyle modifications. Serving patients throughout the Naugatuck Valley and Greater Bridgeport area, our wellness programs help individuals achieve goals including healthy weight management, improved energy and vitality, better sleep quality, enhanced mental clarity, reduced inflammation, optimized immune function, and graceful aging. Our specialized pain management services offer Shelton residents a drug-free alternative for conditions including lower back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, migraines, tension headaches, and post-surgical discomfort. Joe Downer holds advanced certifications in Dry Needling, Pelvic Floor Dry Needling, Trigger Point Acupuncture, and EXSTORE Acupuncture from ASE Seminars — specialized training that allows him to treat complex pain conditions other practitioners cannot effectively address. Combining acupuncture's proven analgesic effects with functional medicine's investigative approach, we address both immediate pain symptoms and underlying factors perpetuating your suffering. Many patients who've found limited relief from medications, injections, and physical therapy alone experience significant improvement through our integrated treatment protocols.
Women's Health & Fertility Support
Our women's health services provide natural, effective support for the unique health challenges women face throughout their lives. From menstrual irregularities and PMS to fertility optimization and IVF support to perimenopause and menopause symptom management, Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center offers compassionate, personalized care. We collaborate with leading fertility clinics throughout Connecticut to provide comprehensive support that addresses both physiological factors and the emotional stress of the fertility journey.
Stress, Anxiety & Emotional Wellness
In today's demanding world, chronic stress and anxiety have become epidemic — affecting sleep, digestion, immune function, hormonal balance, and overall quality of life. Our emotional wellness services help Shelton area residents break the cycle of stress and restore calm, clarity, and resilience. Acupuncture effectively regulates the nervous system, shifting your body from chronic "fight or flight" mode into restorative "rest and digest" states. Combined with functional medicine assessment of adrenal function, neurotransmitter balance, and nutritional status, our comprehensive approach addresses stress from every angle. Many patients report improvements not only in anxiety symptoms but in sleep quality, energy levels, and overall sense of wellbeing.
Digestive Health & Gut Restoration
Your digestive system influences far more than just how you process food — gut health impacts immune function, mental health, hormone balance, inflammation levels, and even weight management. Our digestive health services help patients throughout Connecticut overcome conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, bloating, constipation, food sensitivities, and inflammatory bowel conditions. Through comprehensive functional medicine testing and targeted acupuncture protocols that regulate digestive function, we identify and address the root causes of your digestive distress. Our gut restoration programs have helped countless patients finally find relief from symptoms that significantly diminished their quality of life.
Cosmetic Acupuncture Services in Shelton, CT
Cosmetic acupuncture at Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center offers Shelton and Fairfield and Newhaven County residents a natural alternative to injectables and cosmetic procedures. By improving circulation, stimulating collagen production, and balancing internal systems that influence skin health, cosmetic acupuncture helps reduce fine lines, improve skin tone, and promote a youthful, radiant appearance. Treatments are personalized and focus on both facial rejuvenation and whole-body wellness.
Dry Needling Therapy in Shelton, CT
Our dry needling services provide effective relief for muscular pain, stiffness, and movement limitations. Patients throughout Shelton and surrounding communities experience faster recovery and improved mobility through this precise, evidence-based approach.
Functional Muscle Testing & Nutritional Assessment
Functional muscle testing allows us to assess how the body responds to stressors, nutrients, and internal imbalances. This advanced evaluation method helps identify underlying causes of chronic symptoms such as fatigue, digestive issues, inflammation, and hormonal imbalance. Used alongside acupuncture and functional medicine, muscle testing supports highly individualized care for patients across Connecticut.
Heart Sound Recorder Testing in Shelton, CT
The Heart Sound Recorder (HSR) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that evaluates cardiovascular efficiency and nervous system balance. By analyzing heart sound patterns, we gain insight into stress levels, circulation, and autonomic function — often identifying imbalances before they develop into more serious conditions. This technology supports preventative and personalized healthcare planning.
Advanced Lab Services & Diagnostic Testing
Our lab services provide in-depth diagnostic insights beyond standard blood tests. Serving Shelton, Fairfield County, and surrounding areas, we offer hormone testing, nutrient analysis, gut health panels, food sensitivity testing, and metabolic assessments. These results allow us to design targeted treatment protocols that address root causes rather than managing symptoms alone.
PEMF Therapy in Shelton, CT
PEMF therapy supports healing by improving cellular communication and energy production. This gentle, non-invasive therapy helps reduce inflammation, relieve chronic pain, enhance circulation, and accelerate recovery from injuries. Patients throughout Connecticut use PEMF therapy as part of comprehensive wellness and pain management programs.
Red Light Therapy Services
Red light therapy promotes cellular repair, circulation, and tissue regeneration using targeted wavelengths of light. At Stratford Acupuncture & Nutritional Wellness Center, this therapy is used to support skin health, muscle recovery, joint pain relief, and overall wellness. Consistent sessions help patients feel energized, recover faster, and heal more efficiently.
Scar Therapy & Post-Surgical Recovery
Scar therapy helps restore mobility and nerve function by addressing restrictions caused by scar tissue. Whether from surgery, injury, or childbirth, untreated scars can contribute to chronic pain and dysfunction. Our specialized scar therapy techniques help soften tissue, improve circulation, and support full-body healing for patients across Shelton and the greater Fairfield County region.
Don't Spend Another Month Feeling This Way
Here's a truth most healthcare providers won't tell you: the longer you wait to address chronic health problems, the harder they become to fix. Pain creates more pain. Hormone imbalances cascade into other issues. Inflammation compounds over time.
The best day to start feeling better was years ago. The second-best day is today.
Right now, Joe is accepting new patients from Shelton and the surrounding areas. With 140+ five-star reviews and thousands of patients treated, there's a reason people from all over Connecticut drive to see him specifically. But appointment slots fill quickly, especially for new patient evaluations.
